An hour-long timer behaves differently from a short one: you rarely check it — until the last ten minutes, when every check happens at once. That is the stretch where an exam needs its answers tidied and a meeting needs a decision.
So that those final minutes are not spent hunting for a clock, open the PiP window at the start and park it in a corner. It keeps its position for the whole session.
If you are timing an exam, keep a separate alarm as a backup — browser power saving or a closed tab can end a web timer.
PipTim stores the end time when you press start and recomputes the remaining time from the clock on every tick. The display may update less often while the tab is hidden, but the moment you return it shows the true remaining time. The reasoning is in why browser timers drift.
It depends on the work. If it is the kind you do not want interrupted once you are in it, an hour is right. Otherwise 50 minutes on, 10 off lasts longer across a day.
